Living with a Golden Retriever

Goldens are the gold standard for family dogs: patient with toddlers, gentle with grandparents, and convinced that every visitor came specifically to see them. Bred as working retrievers, they carry a soft mouth, a softer temperament and a lifelong enthusiasm for carrying things around the house.

In Singapore they do best in condo or landed homes with daily walks and a weekly swim or park session. They are not HDB-approved, and their double coat means aircon plus regular brushing is the way to keep them comfortable in the tropics.

Care notes

Puppy prep
  • 45–60 min of exercise daily — a bored Golden redecorates
  • Weekly brush, more during coat blow; grooming every 6–8 weeks
  • Hip & elbow scores on both parents matter — always ask (ours are shared openly)
  • Slow-feed bowls help; Goldens inhale food as a hobby

Every family goes home with a written care plan — plus lifetime WhatsApp support for the 2am “is this normal?” questions.

Golden Retriever questions

Are Golden Retrievers allowed in HDB flats?

No — Goldens exceed HDB's approved-breed size limit. They're perfect for condos (check your MCST rules) and landed homes. If you live in an HDB flat, look at our Toy Poodles, Maltipoos or Corgis instead.

How much grooming does the coat really need?

A proper brush once a week, daily during the twice-yearly coat blow, and a professional groom every 6–8 weeks. In our climate, never shave them — the double coat is their insulation.
